Associates/BNA Annual Meeting

In 2003, the Associates and the Baromedical Nurses Association
held their annual meeting in conjunction with the UHMS Scientific Meeting
held at the Hilton in Quebec City, Canada, June 19-21, 2003.
Despite the meeting being held outside the U.S., there was a
large contingent of Associate/BNA members in attendance. Both the
marketing pre-course and the scientific sessions were well-attended, and many
physicians commented that the Associate/BNA program provided much useful
information.
The Associates of the UHMS
would like to congratulate and recognize the following individuals as the
recipients of the Paul Baker & Associates in Excellence for Presentation
awards at our annual meeting held in Quebec City.

The Associates in Excellence
for Presentation is presented @ the annual scientific meeting, to the Associate
Member that makes the presentation that is judged to be of clinical,
educational, & scientific benefit to the hyperbaric community. This year’s award was presented to Karen Swaby, RN, CHRN
for her presentation titled “Blood
Glucose Changes and the Effects of Feeding in Diabetics Undergoing Hyperbaric
Oxygen Therapy.” Patient’s
blood glucose was prospectively monitored in al diabetic patients undergoing
HBO2T from March 1998 to February 2003. All diabetic patients were tested
daily prior to treatment, and 20 minutes from treatment end. All
treatments were performed at 2 ATA or 2.4 ATA. Blood glucose (measured by
glucometer) had to be > 100 mg/dl for patients to undergo HBO2T.
All patients with a glucose < 150 mg/dl were fed at least 110
kilocalories prior to HBO2T. Others were fed in-chamber if they felt
hungry. The results were that
patients who were not fed, decreased blood glucose in 91.6% of dives, and had an
average decrease of 22.5% of baseline. Patients, who were fed, decreased
blood glucose in 69% of the dives, with an average decrease of 0.85%.
There were no episodes of symptomatic hypoglycemia with this program.
Karen works @ the Memorial Hermann Center for Hyperbaric Medicine, Memorial
Hermann Center for Wound Healing and Memorial Hermann Center for
Lymphedema Management and has been involved with hyperbaric medicine
department in March 1994 as a staff nurse. She now is the
clinical manager of I have participated in more than 10 abstracts
focusing on wound care and Hyperbaric Medicine. I also co- wrote
a chapter in the Hyperbaric nursing textbook.
