Though there have been Associate members of the UHMS for years,
formal organization of this group did not occur until the late
1980's. The Associates are governed by a
Board of
Directors. Today, Associates serve on most UHMS committees,
and the Associate Chair serves as a voting member of the UHMS
Executive Committee.

The Associates,
along with the
Baromedical Nurses' Association
(BNA) sponsor an annual
scientific meeting. The Associate/BNA annual meeting is
held in conjunction with the UHMS Annual Scientific Meeting,
except when the UHMS meeting is held outside North America.
In those years, the Associate/BNA meeting is held in
conjunction with the meeting of a UHMS chapter.
The Associates present two awards annually: the Paul C.
Baker Award and the Associates Award for Excellence in
Presentation.
