Candidates for Office Kevan Corson, CHT Chair, Nominations Committee
The Nominations Committee would like to thank all of the members who sent in nominations for the candidates listed below and to the candidates for accepting the nomination to run for office. The ballots for the 2007 Associates election are be mailed in early February to all Associate members in good standing. When you receive your ballot, please take a moment and read the information provided on each candidate before casting your vote. Your vote is important and makes a difference in selecting the most qualified person(s) for each position.
CHAIR-ELECT NOMINEES Bill Davison, CHT Current Position: Program Director and Safety Officer for the Hyperbaric Medicine Center at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. HBO2 Activities: Bill has been an Associate member of the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society since 1991 and a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist since its inception in 1997. He has served as Associates Member at Large for the past two years. He is a UHMS Clinical Hyperbaric Facility Accreditation Surveyor, and was a member of the first training class in 2002. He sits on three ASME PVHO sub-committees. Bill has presented nationally on various technical and operational topics. He holds an A.S. in Underwater Technology from the Florida Institute of Technology and has been involved in clinical hyperbaric medicine since 1988. He has played a key roll in the establishment of three hospital based hyperbaric programs. Prior to 1988 he worked in the offshore oil industry as a commercial diver, life support technician and emergency medical technician. Vision: “If elected to the position of Chair Elect for the Associates’ Branch of the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society my focus will be to improve communications to and amongst Associate members. My second goal will be to improve recognition for the many contributions of Associate members. I will also strive to strengthen our presence were we have one, and create one were we do not. If elected, my experience in the field and as a Member at Large will be of benefit to you and our organization”. Thank you for your consideration."
Noel Jett, CHT Current Position: Vice President, Holmes Healthcare, Inc HBO2 Activities: Noel is long standing member of the Associate an has served as UHMS Associates Awards Committee Chair 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, as UHMS Associates Executive Board Member at Large 2003-2004 . An active participant in evaluation and judging of UHMS Associate abstract presentations at UHMS Annual Scientific Meetings, a current UHMS Facility Accreditation CHT Surveyor. I have worked in the hyperbaric industry since the early 90’s in both multiplace and monoplace environments and have held positions as CHT, Technical Director, Safety Director, Clinical Program Director, Program Director, Practice Manager, Administrator, and Vice President in the hyperbaric field. Participating Industry Member of HOTA/AAWCM. A Certified Hyperbaric Technologist Fellow and Diplomat Status with the American Academy of Wound Management since 1999 A Certified Wound Specialist and licensed EMT Paramedic Hold Masters Degree in Public Health, Bachelor of Science in Public Administration; Associate in Applied Science in Fire Science. Vision: “If elected to the position of Chair Elect for the Associates I will Foster the positive momentum the Associates have gained over the past several years in moving towards a more active and participative role within the greater body of the UHMS membership. Further solidify the Associates position as a co-equal partner in managing the future direction of the UHMS as a society, while maintaining a unique identity that remains responsive to and representative of the Associate membership’s concerns."
Stacy Handley, BSN, ACHRN, CWCN Current
Position: Vice President National Baromedical Services Stacy actively serves in a leadership capacity within the UHMS Associates as the Member at Large, Historian, Chair of the Education Committee and Member of the Planning Committee. As Chair of the Education Committee, Stacy introduced in 2006 the Associates Recognition Scholarship to provide an opportunity to deserving candidates a $2000.00 cash prize to assist individuals to attend and participate in Annual Scientific Meetings. Stacy serves as the Historian for the Baromedical Nurses Association and is a regular contributor to the BNA newsletter. Stacy was chosen by the Australian Hyperbaric Technicians and Nurses Association to be their International Representative to help liaise between the three organizations. Stacy is a co-editor and contributor to the website MedEdOnline.org, providing safety notices and organizational updates on behalf of the UHMS Associates. Vision: “If elected my goal as the Chair Elect is to continue to provide support to the board members, respond to the needs of the membership, act as an ambassador for our colleague organizations, and continue to generate solutions to improve communication and involvement among the members.”

We have made great strides in the last few years and that process needs to continue for us to expand our sphere of influence as well as our horizons. As a collective group there is little we cannot accomplish and if we want to advance the field of hyperbaric medicine beyond what it is today it will require that we work together and push ourselves further than we thought possible. Tiger Woods summed it up best when he said, "No matter how good you get you can always get better and that's the exciting part". We are part of a great organization and we have the potential of making it even greater through our active involvement and willingness to think outside the box. Communication is a key element to our growth and ability to work as a cohesive group of colleagues. With the Internet and e-mail capabilities we all have access to, our potential as Associates has never been greater. ”
MEMBER AT LARGE NOMINEES
Matt Brauninger, CHT Current Position: I am the Senior Hyperbaric Technician at HyOx Medical Treatment Center Marietta Georgia, which is a UHMS Accredited facility (with distinction) HBO2 Activities: I have been a member of the UHMS Associates since 2005, I am a CHT with experience in mono and multiplace facilities. I am responsible for patient teaching, new employee orientation, TcpO2 testing, chamber maintenance, chamber operations, and documentation. I am a trained Safety Director and serve as chamber operator, and inside tender in a 12 man multiplace chamber. I am also trained in Wound Care and provide those services as well Vision: “If elected to the position of Member at Large, I would continue to support the core objectives of the UHMS Associates in providing a forum for communication between the life sciences and other disciplines concerned with Hyperbaric Medicine and Undersea activity. I would further promote educational activities and programs which serve to improve scientific knowledge in the areas related to our field."
Glen Canterbury, CHT Current Position: Sales Manager, ETC BioMedical Systems Group HBO2 Activities: I have been involved in various facets of hyperbaric medicine for nearly 13 years, with my original introduction originating in diving. In addition to interacting with people when they are in the process of acquiring monoplace or multiplace hyperbaric chambers, a regular part of my duties involves providing facility evaluation and layout design assistance. I routinely provide start up assistance in my customer’s facilities, which includes assisting with the installation of equipment, performing operational training, and helping them set up hospital hyperbaric related policies and procedures. In addition, I was recently a member of the in-chamber team for my company that tested the deck chambers (called SDCs) that form the heart of the US Navy’s new submarine rescue system. I am a member of the Associates Infusion Pump Task Force, which is responsible for interfacing with IV pump manufacturers in an effort to address the issues related to the Abbott 3HB and IVAC 530 pumps, related tubing, and support issues. Vision: "I have several ideas that I would like to see come to fruition. As all, I would like to help increase active membership. I believe that the Associates have, through on-the-job experience and formal training, amassed a significant amount of valuable knowledge on both clinical and technical issues. Because of this knowledge, I see the Associates having a significant role to play in the research and documentation of both currently accepted indications and to expand the provision of the hyperbaric medicine into the addition of new indications. We have a responsibility to be part of an organized, focused team that is constantly moving forward and demonstrating hyperbaric medicine as a mainstream/leading-edge, cost-effective treatment modality in the eyes of CMS and private insurance carriers, as well as the medical community as a whole."
SHANE McKINNON, CHT, A-DMT, EMT-P Current Position: Technical / Operation and Safety Director, HyOx Medical Treatment Center, Marietta, GA HBO2 Activities: Member of the UHMS since 2004, and a CHT since 2003. Presenter for local wound care, Police / Fire rescue recovery divers and civilian dive clubs. Hyperbaric Technologist Instructor, 22 years of Diving / Hyperbaric / Emergency medical experience. Vision: “I would work to facilitate a stronger working relationship between the UHMS, the Associates and the BNA. I would support the ongoing endeavor for increasing the medical and technical knowledge of CHT’s through multilevel certification.”
Mario Caruso, CHT, DMT-A Current Position: Safety Director, Hyperbaric Services Comprehensive Healthcare Solutions, Inc. HBO2 Activities: Mario Caruso began his career in hyperbaric medicine at NOAA in the early 1980’s, where he was trained as a Hyperbaric Technologist, Diver Medic, and multiplace chamber operator. His experience spans both Multiplace and Monoplace hyperbaric chambers systems, and rescue diving operations. Mario is a graduate of the Broward County Fire Academy, completed training as a Paramedic at Miami-Dade Community College. He worked as a Firefighter / Paramedic and was attached to the Dive Rescue Team. Mario is a former Instructor for the Walt Disney World Epcot Dive Quest Team. He is a PADI Course Director, DAN Instructor-Trainer and an American Heart Association BLS Training Center Faculty. Mario earned his NBDHMT Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) National Certification with “Distinction”. He was one of the first to undergo training as a Hyperbaric Safety Director. He is a UHMS Hyperbaric Facility Surveyor, well versed in NFPA codes and regulations. Mario is a recipient of several community service awards: to include Hallandale Fire Department “Official Commendation” PADI “Certificate of Recognition for Excellence” Reedy Creek Emergency Services - Walt Disney World “Certificate of Recognition” PADI “Good Samaritan Award” St. Joseph’s-Baptist Health Care “Life Saving Award” Mario has authored two specialty courses (Diving Accident Management, and Introduction to Hyperbarics) for the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), and co-authored two Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) abstracts on hyperbaric medicine. Mario is active in lecturing on the topics of hyperbaric medicine, dive rescue, firefighting and scuba diving. Recently Mario was instrumental in the start-up of a hyperbaric medical unit for a level one trauma center in Central Illinois. Vision: "Few of us could have predicted the growth of clinical hyperbaric medicine, especially in the last 5 years, however the greatest growth is ahead of us; therefore as associate members of the UHMS we must be intimately and actively involved in the future of our organization. We stand on the shoulders of great men and women that have brought us where we are today, now we are the ones that are challenged to shape the future with the same enthusiasm, vigor and conviction of the leaders that came before us. Serving the UHMS as a Member-at-Large will give me the opportunity to work hard towards the future endeavors of our organization and hopefully play a small, but albeit vital, part of the future direction of the UHMS."
Heath A. Davis, RCP, CHT Current Position: Safety Director / Sr. Technologist Comprehensive Wound Care Center, Louise Gartner Center for Hyperbaric Medicine Baylor University Medical Center HBO2 Activities: Assisted with the build out portion of a new facility ensuring all standards and guidelines are met. Staff training (HBO, ventilator, new staff orientation). Developed Safety Drills and Monthly Safety Meeting Standards. Provided technical support to multiple operating sites and local fire departments. Assisted with National UHMS Conference, Dallas 2004. Researched external temporary pacemaker under pressure. Safety Director Course planned for March 2007. Vision: "My vision is to see CHT’s have the ability to get state licensure. I would like to see the NBDHMT have both entry level and advanced certification. I believe that we need to continue research. Research is the only way to continue to grow and to continue to provide quality care to our patients."
