AAWM Announces New Wound Care Credential

The American Academy of Wound Management (http://www.aawm.org) , "a national inter-disciplinary certifying board for health care professionals involved in wound care" recenty announced the introduction of a new level of certification.  Candidates must have 3 years clinical experience in wound care to sit for the exam.

For more information regarding qualifications, the exam, and to download application forms, visit http://www.aawm.org/p_cwca-application.shtml.

From Dr Caroline Fife, past President of the UHMS:

I am writing to let you know of an exciting opportunity for certified hyperbaric technicians. Many of them act as wound care technicians in the clinics in which they work. However, because they do not have a professional license, they have been inelligible to sit for the CWS (Certified Wound Specialist) exam which the rest of us use to designate that we have expertise in the care and management of wounds.

An initiative which began when I was on the Board of the American Academy of Wound Management  has come to fruition and I am thrilled to tell you about it -- a new category called "Certified Wound Care Associate." CHTs could sit for this certification. I believe this is an excellent opportunity for CHTs. It makes them more "marketable" in the job application process, it increases the qualilty of care provided to patients (since it increases the educational level of the staff), and it dovetails nicely with the Facility Certification process.

At the very least you needed to be aware of this certification, but I was hoping that the UHMS would dissiminate this information to the Associates so that we could have a good showing of CHTs at the first exam.

John Margeson, AAWM Director of Administration reports:

"Our new Certified Wound Care Associate (CWCA) certification for wound management associates launched this year and we've been pleased with the level of interest so far. In order to accommodate those interested in applying we've moved the deadline for application materials from May 30th to June 30th.

We hope that this will give all potential CWCA candidates enough time to complete their application packets and send them to us. As long as the application is post-marked by June 30th it will be reviewed and considered for the upcoming examination.

We encourage all medical professionals interested in wound care to visit our website for more information on the CWCA certification: http://www.aawm.org/p_cwca-application.shtml.

Congratulations to those who have already been accepted!"
